Homemade Garden Plant Labels or Markers

Garden plant labels or markers can become important as a gardener propagates more plants and grows more seedlings. The common practice of labeling seedling bags with masking tapes is quite easy to do. It basically does the job in a quick manner and inexpensively.

However, with the need to reuse seedling bags as well as the impact of long term use, masking tape labels may not be the best way to label garden seedling bags. Here are a couple of problems this gardener has experienced with the use of masking tapes as labels for garden plants.

Joining Parts of a Garden Nursery Rack

One of the undesirable outcomes of building DIY projects is the excess of some building materials that were used. Such is the case with the recent projects on a wall-mounted garden nursery rack and a homemade rod assembly for hanging baskets.

As the racks and rods were measured and cut to custom-fit an existing wall, bits of hardware with odd measurements were left. Rather than throw or dump these somewhere, they were put into better use by joining them together for additional garden racks and hanging rod assemblies.

Since this gardener doesn't have access to welding tools or facilities, an option left was to creatively join the leftover materials without compromising too much the structural and functional integrity of the new gardening projects.

Wall-Mounted Rod for Hanging Baskets

In a past article, this gardener discussed a simple, yet functional, wall-mounted homemade bracket for garden hanging baskets. However, as more cascading garden plants were grown, more plants in hanging garden pots were needed to be displayed. Numerous individual garden support brackets weren't practical nor space efficient. An overhead garden rod for hanging garden pots would prove to be a viable solution for hanging baskets lined up in a row.

This article discusses a homemade gardening project where 2 overhead rods may be suspended by support brackets. Unlike the garden DIY project in the past article, no screw hooks and nuts will be used. Instead, rebars or reinforcing bars will be used as the garden rods. The two rods could accommodate the small hanging 8-inch baskets lined up in two rows.

DIY Wall-Mounted Garden Nursery Racks

For a gardener who has an ever increasing number of seedlings to grow, a garden seedling nursery rack proves to be a space saver and practical staging and storage area. The garden nursery rack provides the gardener plenty of space for seedlings, seedling trays, pots, tools and so on.

The open type, made with wire mesh steel matting, allows easy drainage when watering the plants on the rack. For gardeners growing seedlings individually in garden seedling trays, the open type allows picking of seedling plugs without lifting the tray.
